Boxes

Boxes for me are about curiosity. Whether it’s a brown box delivery or something wrapped in beautiful Japanese paper, when you see one you instinctually want to open it, to see what it contains.

Like my books, I want my boxes to be sturdy enough to be handled. I love exploring new ways for boxes to open or to close. Some boxes have multiple compartments. Some have magnetic closures. Others are simple and ready for whatever treasure you choose to add.

Making boxes is a meditative practice for me. Gluing up the cut box pieces, they become something sculptural. I use a mix of PVA and methyl cellulose to glue the papers and they become cloth-like when they are wet. The fantastic patterns and colors of Japanese Chiyogami or Katazome never tire to amaze me. And then at the end of the making there is a new box, ready to hold whatever you can imagine.

It was recently announced that the owner of the last remaining studio in Japan to make Katazome passed away suddenly in February 2025. It is likely the end of this particular tradition and paper.
