Full of good intentions was I back in November 2018. Little did I know that I was about to take a dramatic turn in my professional life and start grad school in a subject that was about as different from my previous life as one could possibly imagine. I’m about to conclude grad school (30 days and counting) and have a new job lined up for September 1. So it seems to be working out.
With the pandemic MCBA is offering online workshops and I am a big fan! I miss the quiet conversations at the work tables and seeing what people are doing, but I love that instructors are no longer limited to Minnesota and that (introvert that I am) I don’t have to go out to take the class. Just open my laptop and I’m there. I took one course with my favorite Jody Williams on folded structures. A one-sheet book, a “snake” book (aka meander book) and a review (for me) of the drum leaf binding, a favorite.
Last night I spent three hours with Amanda D’Amico on a myriad number of one sheet books, aptly titled Single Sheet Bonanza. By my count we made seven different single sheet books, looked at how to apply some pop-up cuts to one of these, plus folding a cover and a case for all seven samples. Whew. Precision in folding was not on the menu…that’s for going back and trying it all again, but it was a great tutorial and a great mind break from my grad studies.
The image above is Amanda’s work from the class description. She’s teaching elsewhere (online) so it’s worth clicking around. Three other sites are offering at home classes: Pyramid Atlantic, BookPaperThread and the San Francisco Center for the Book.
